SCRUM-ptious

As mentioned in my last blog post SCRUM is a management method that stems from ‘agile’. Evernote notes

SCRUM is lightweight and perfect for clarity when a team work together in order to reach a common goal. It is flexible in the sense that is so fast paced that can easily be re adapted around the clients needs. In the case of the cork LGBT archives this method works very well as new content may be discovered as any point. http://corklgbtarchive.com

Here is an image of the SCRUM plan

This can be broken down to To do, doing and done. In assigning each person a colour per sticky note this allows each member to be able to clearly see the progression of the project. The transparency here keeps the flow of the project in manageable chunks with the relief at the end of saying ‘done’ to reduce pressure and increase productivity.

Flow-rida

As I have mentioned in a previous post(“If you’re happy and you know it”) I watched the documentary “Happy”. Mentioned as a secret to happiness was the concept of “Flow” which peaked my interest. What flow is in terms of psychology is what some people may call “in the zone”-being totally absorbed by a task. This aligns your emotions, channels them into the task at hand. Examples of tasks to immerse yourself in may be work, dance, yoga, meditation, music, whatever is of great enough interest to get lost in.

Upon further research to wikipedia it states that

Schaffer (2013) proposed seven flow conditions:

  1. Knowing what to do
  2. Knowing how to do it
  3. Being aware of  how well you are doing
  4. Knowing where to go
  5. High perceived challenges
  6. High perceived skills
  7. Freedom from distractions

I found the idea of flow to be very interesting and I will post further bits and pieces in relation to flow again. Till then feel free yet again to comment and give thoughts-maybe experiences.

Have a nice day!-Eva x

If you’re Happy and you know it

During a Netflix spiral I recently came across a documentary titled “Happy”. This documentary delved into real stories from the slums of kolkata to the swamps of louisianna taking a look at what makes people really happy. If you are reading this try take a moment to ponder upon this concept-what makes you really happy? (Feel free to comment). Immediately there is always those who say money and materialistic things alike. Of course on the other hand there is health, family, friends. It was very interesting and touching to see how there was communities in slums saying that they are best friends and always there for each other. There are people being soaked to the skin while running which rickshaws but say it is okay and doesn’t make them unhappy as the sun will dry it a they run more. Personally, I protect my happiness like a baby it is a vital thing to protect for everybody and I do my very best to stay positive and upbeat regardless of the situation. I would recommend this documentary as it does put into perspective “first world problems” and is a really feel good watch that inspires.

Snow joke

Whilst walking home from college- a usually quite boring and monotonous task I noticed it began to snow…a lot. I didn’t quicken my pace but enjoyed the walk with a different outlook of strolling in a wonderland as opposed to the same grey path every day. Probably due to how snow seems to appeal to the inner child of every adult, the image of snowballs, snowmen, the blanket concealing the usual imagery that one is exposed to daily.(Not the desperate scraping of the car to make it to work on time.)

funny-shoveling-snow

I began to think, when it rains even the slightest bit we run, complain, dress incorrectly for it and get frizzy hair-first things that arise from rainfall. Yet when it snows the majority becomes “is it schtickin?!” the simple idea of the snow staying on the ground is exciting. Why can we not see the same optimism snow instills in us when we are (more regularly) faced. There’s always going to be people that…see the snow as being yellow, but with a bit of optimism, there can be that excitement whatever the weather!! After all, snow is just white rain.

[Cotton eyed] Joe Dispenza

Again to touch off my interest in taking power of one’s mind I came across Joe dispenza whilst researching for my presentation. Dispenza, at the age of 23 was involved in a cycling accident when he was hit by a vehicle. This resulted in 6 of his vertebrate being compacted and a need for serious surgery. As a result for the speed that the body heals it was vital for him to agree to the surgery within 48 hours. Dispenza has extensive knowledge in spinal injuries etc. and made a decision to not have the surgery. He prided himself on the saying “the power that made the body heals the body”. Dispenza mastered his mind and healed his own body. He writes on the idea of rewiring his own mind and allowing yourself to develop a placebo effect. He is an extremely interesting man that takes power over the mind more than I believed was possible. His material is available on youtube and ted talks as well as the books that he has written, only upon light research I have become motivated and inspired, I’m looking forward to further discovery of his methods and hope to adopt some.

Sweet [Holmes] Alabama

Previously for my Evernote notebook for my Digital humanities class I gathered information on what is known as the “Loci effect”. I got the idea from this from the Cumberbatch version of Sherlock Holmes as this “effect” is practised by Holmes in terms of his “mind palace”. This “Loci effect” (locus) means location in latin. This is the method of mastering memory through the usage of visualising location. To further explain, create a list-eg: John Lennon, Kiera Knightly, Joesph Gordon Levitt, Chris Hemsworth and Alexa Chung. Now imagine a familiar place-and place these people around your home eg:John Lennon in the kitchen.Through the walk through of your house this can help you to remember easily as opposed to a list. I find this to be extremely interesting as I am fascinated by the idea of being able to take such control of your mind and make it exactly what you want. This is also why I took such interest in “self-directed and self-regulated learning” that we have also discussed in class as it displays full power again.
